Graham Cracker Porter and Barrel Aged Japance Off both take home top honors
Denver, Colo. (September 25, 2018) – Denver Beer Co. claimed two gold medals at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) competition for Graham Cracker Porter and Barrel Aged Japance Off. Presented by the Brewers Association, GABF is the largest national beer competition that recognizes the most outstanding beers produced in the United States. The top three winners in the competition’s 102 beer categories were announced September 22 at the Great American Beer Festival awards ceremony held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado. Denver Beer Co. took home two of Colorado’s 32 medals in this year’s competition which had more than 8,500 entries.
“These two medals are really a testament to the hard work and incredible talent of our team,” said Jason Buehler, Head Brewer for Denver Beer Co. “We are very proud of our barrel aging program and is great to see one of our barrel aged beers take home a gold for the second time in three years. Graham Cracker Porter is a consistent favorite among our customers so we love seeing that brew earn additional hardware as well.”
The 2018 gold medal is Graham Cracker Porter’s second award at GABF in the Specialty Beer category. The brew won a bronze in 2011 for the same category during Denver Beer Co.’s inaugural year. Graham Cracker Porter, described as “a campfire in a can” is a brown porter with notes of vanilla, biscuit, and a hint of mulling spices. A dark pour with mild lacing,Graham Cracker Porter features chocolate notes and a semi-dry finish of roasted malt and chocolate. Graham Cracker Porter is available year-round throughout the state of Colorado in 6-packs and on draft.
Denver Beer Co. also took home a gold in the barrel aged beer category for Barrel Aged Japance Off, a specialty release beer that is part of Denver Beer Co.’s limited edition bomber series. Barrel Aged Japance Off was created by aging a sake yeast saison in red wine barrels for 8 months. The aging process yielded a complex flavor combination of oak, red wine, and fruitiness with a hint of Mistral hops. Brettanomyces was added to a select barrel and blended in for an extra dimension of complexity. The result is a dry, crisp, and easy drinking yet extremely flavorful brew. Barrel Aged Japance Off is the second gold medal that Denver Beer Co. has received in the wood and barrel aged beer category, having won for Drama Queen in 2016.
The 2018 gold medals make a total of 6 for Denver Beer Co. who won a bronze for Graham Cracker Porter in 2011, bronze for King Ink in 2015, gold for Drama Queen in 2016, and a gold for Just Another Pretty Face in 2017. The 2018 GABF competition winners were selected by an international panel of 293 expert judges who narrowed down an average of 83 entries per category to select the top three.
