Denver Beer Co. Wins Gold Medal at the 2016 World Beer Cup

May 17, 2016

Summit Sunrise earns top honors in the Double Red Ale category.

Denver, Colo. (May 17, 2016) – The 2016 World Beer Cup Competition recently honored Denver Beer Co.’s winter seasonal Summit Sunrise as a gold medal winner in the Double Red Ale category. Presented by the Brewers Association, the World Beer Cup Competition has been held bi-annually since 1996 to celebrate the art and science of brewing. Denver Beer Co.’s Summit Sunrise claimed a gold medal in Double Red Ale category, topping a field of 51 entries.

Summit Sunrise is characterized by a balance of malt and hops making this Red Rye IPA a quintessential example of a Double Red Ale.  Crimson in color, Summit Sunrise boasts pine and citrus hop aroma, spicy rye tones, and a rich, malty backbone and is 6.3% ABV.

“Summit Sunrise is a beer that is both malt forward and hop forward.  It is bold with big flavor, hoppy with a strong caramel notes to complement the juicy fruit flavor of the Mosaic hops,” said Jason Buehler, Head Brewer for Denver Beer Co.

The World Beer Cup is a global competition which continues to create greater consumer awareness about different beer styles and flavor profiles while promoting international brewing excellence. The World Beer Cup, often referred to as “The Olympics of Beer Competitions,” is the most prestigious beer competition in the world.  The 2016 World Beer Cup featured 6,596 beer entries from 1,907 breweries worldwide for awards in 96 categories. The awards were presented at the conclusion of Craft Brewers Conference & BrewExpo America® in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

“This year’s judge panel was our most international ever, with three-quarters of judges travelling to Philadelphia from outside the U.S.,” said Chris Swersey, competition manager, World Beer Cup. “Judges commented throughout the week that overall beer quality continues to improve across the spectrum of world beer styles. While breweries may hold the awards, beer drinkers around the world are the true winners.”

Summit Sunrise is available seasonally in cans from Denver Beer Co. from November to March.  To celebrate the World Beer Cup medal, Denver Beer Co. will offer a limited release of the beer in the Platte Street Taproom to be available on draft only starting June 1, 2016 until it is gone.
