Denver Beer Co. takes home gold and silver medals in “Wood & Barrel-Aged” categories, while Cerveceria Colorado recognized in the “Chili Beer” category with a silver medal.
Denver, Colo. (October 17, 2020) — Denver Beer Co. was awarded both a gold and silver medal at the 2020 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) competition, while sister-brewery Cerveceria Colorado took home a silver medal. GABF is the world’s largest beer competition and is presented annually by the Brewers Association to recognize the most outstanding beers produced in the United States. Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded virtually this year in 91 beer categories to establish the best examples of each style in the country.
Denver Beer Co. was recognized for the second consecutive year in the wood and barrel aged strong beer-style category for its Amburana Dream, an imperial porter aged on Amburana wood from Brazil. Amburana Dream took home top honors in the same category in 2019. Amburana Graham Cracker Porter was awarded a silver medal in the 2020 wood and barrel aged beer-style category as well. Amburana Graham Cracker Porter is a barrel-aged version of the Denver Beer Co. classic, Graham Cracker Porter, and is also aged on Amburana wood from Brazil. Cerveceria Colorado was awarded its first GABF win with a silver medal in the chili beer category for Poblano Pils. Poblano Pils is a Mexican Lager aged on smoked fresh poblano peppers for a delightful, light pepper aroma and flavor.
Denver Beer Co. has taken home a total of 9 medals from GABF since opening in 2011, including a bronze for Graham Cracker Porter in 2011, bronze for King Ink in 2015, gold for Drama Queen in 2016, a gold for Just Another Pretty Face in 2017, gold medals for both Graham Cracker Porter and Barrel Aged Japance Off in 2018, and a gold for Amburana Dream in 2019.
“GABF recognizes the best beer and brewers in the country,” stated head brewer Jason Buehler. “2020 has brought many challenges and these medals will be a reminder of the passion and extra hard work that has gone into our brewery this year. I am so proud and thankful for the dedication of our entire team.”
In the 34th edition of the GABF competition, 8,806 entries were submitted to the general competition from 1,720 breweries from across the nation, with entries from all 50 states plus Washington, D.C.. Judging was conducted by a panel of 115 judges from 21 states.
“This year’s GABF competition may have looked a little different, but the beers entered into the competition were as impressive and innovative as ever,” said Chris Swersey, competition manager, Great American Beer Festival. “This has arguably been one of the most challenging years breweries have ever faced, so we hope these awards serve as a symbol not only of brewing excellence but also the resiliency of the craft brewing community as a whole.”
